Cab Driver – Mills Brothers

This 1974 release features the timeless Mills brothers, now reduced from four to three, but still bringing warm harmonies to a mix of contemporary and older favorites. Their fame had begun over 40 years earlier with highly charged, polished renditions of popular tunes of the day.
These selections strip away the zealous scatting and imitation of musical instruments for the essence of the Mills oeuvre: old fashioned, barbershop style harmonizing, with its close affinity to the doo-wop groups of the 1950s and '60s. There is an infectious energy when they sing "Glow Worm," one of their signature tunes, while "Cab Driver" finds the brothers in a C&W setting, their mellow tones fitting rhythmically with the twang of the accompanying instruments. "Till Then" recalls R&B groups like the Clovers with its lead voice and harmonized refrains. (allmusic)
